The Illinois Central referred to their popular streamlined train, the City of New Orleans, as “The Great Dayliner” to spotlight the speed in which the passenger train made its way from Chicago to New Orleans. At 16 hours the journey was still a long ride, but compared to the previous running time of 24 hours plus, 16 hours was quite an achievement for the 921-mile trip from Chicago to the Gulf. The running time even included 25 intermediate station stops. Speed limits at 90-100 mph and almost a straight route allowed the City of New Orleans to make such good time. Speedy service and the fact that the City of New Orleans served many small towns along the corridor of middle America made the train very popular.

First introduced in 1947, the City of New Orleans reached its pinnacle in the 1960s but perhaps will be remembered most for a 1971 ride it gave to singer-song writer Steve Goodman who wrote the song about the declining days of the train in the appropriately titled ballad, “City of New Orleans.”

We reproduced the real IC passenger cars in full Scale. The RPO and the Baggage Cars were prototypically 60' long, they are reproduced in full 1:48 Scale at 15'. The 15' cars require O-31 diameter curves.
