One of the many precursors of CalTrain began rail service in the San Francisco peninsula in the 1860s. In 1977 the Peninsula Commuter Service and Southern Pacific agreed to provide rail service through the 3 counties it served. In June 1985 the first of the 63 Gallery Cars go into service, along with 10 F40PH Diesels, each named for a city along the route. Today CalTrain serves the downtown centers of nearly every city on the San Francisco Peninsula and two major airports. Add the CalTrain matching diesel, with the ?meatball? logo, and featuring Command Control, Lionel RailSounds and Electrocouplers, to complete this realistic Northern California Commuter Train.
