F40PH Leads CSX Business Train

CSX Corporation is a massive entity with various arms that reach far beyond railroad activities. Besides its rail unit, CSX extends its business into many fields including real estate, oil, gas, coal, timber properties, aviation, cable television, resort facilities, data processing and publishing interests. It is a corporation of a truly massive scale. In 1980, CSX’s railroad unit became the largest rail system in the country. Its tracks extend the length of the entire eastern seaboard of this country and reach into Canada.

All of this activity makes CSX a fascinating complete transportation system for the railfan to keep an eye on. It has already tried a number of paint schemes and is constantly working to improve its rolling stock, motive power and rail properties.

As with any other large railroad, CSX has need for a business train fleet. A business train is a important part of any major railroad and is often called on for a number of duties. They inspect tracks, serve to test out new routes, carry important railroad officials around the system and allow special guests of the railroad to tour the line. CSX has many modern passenger cars that they have converted for use on their special business train runs. Most are painted in CSX’s blue and gray paint and have gold stripes and lettering.

K-LINE’s rendition of this business train is available two ways. The first is with 21 inch cars led by an F40PH equipped with Lionel RailSounds, TrainMaster Command Control and Electrocouplers for smooth command operation. Another version of the CSX Business Train is available with a conventional diesel with a horn and 15 inch cars.

Probably the most interesting of these 4 cars is the Greenbrier diner car with its name spelled out on the sides in fanciful script lettering. The car’s name comes from the resort located in the Allegheny Mountains of the same name. The Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia has a long history of elegance and is now owned by CSX Corporation. It offers five star dining, golf, horseback riding, tennis, a gun club, a Land Rover driving school, bowling, indoor swimming, bike riding, mineral baths, a spa and many more luxuries.

A 2-PAC of 21 inch cars is available to lengthen the train for those railroaderswith extra long layouts. The 'Illinois' Diner and the 'Kentucky' Power Car are examples of other cars that would be needed on a business excursion across the extensive CSX line.
