By the late 1930s, the lightweight steel passenger car revolution was sweeping the railroads. The on-going rivalry between the two railroad giants, Pennsy and NYC, intensified as both railroads commissioned premier industrial designers to oversee their passenger car modernization upgrades.

While designer Henry Dreyfuss created the silvery-sleek fluted passenger cars for the NYC's 'Great Steel Fleet' (see Empire State Express), well-known designer Raymond Loewy designed the Pennsy's regal 'Fleet of Modernism,' the name given by the Pennsy to include all its new, lightweight passenger trains. Among the new Fleet of Modernism trains was the Spirit of St. Louis that ran between New York, Washington and St. Louis. The steel cars of the Spirit are accurately reproduced here in 15 inches of extruded aluminum.

We reproduced the real 72 foot PRR passenger cars in shortened O Scale (15 inch) in order to give train operators all the detail of Scale while keeping the operator's with the smaller layouts in mind. These 15 inch metal cars smoothly negotiate 31 inch diameter curves which is sure to make them a favorite on many a tight bend.

Additionally, K-LINE® has produced the first correct Flat End Observation Car. The A.J. Cassatt Car was one of seven flat end passenger cars built in 1949 and named for selected PRR Presidents. The flat end cars created the particular look associated with the Pennsylvania’s fleet of post-war streamliners.
