One of Chicago & Alton’s most prominent passenger trains, the Alton Limited was first introduced in 1899 and re-equipped in 1905 and in 1924. The vivid, red-maroon colors applied to the Alton Limited earned it the nickname of The Red Train.

The K-LINE® C&A Pacific is a detailed representation of the colorful engine that led The Red Train from the last class of Pacifics built for the C&A. Pacific locomotive Nos. 650-659 were built in 1913 by Brooks Locomotive Works. As late as 1947, the Alton Limited Heavyweight Train was still in operation, led by the No. 656 pacific steam locomotive that was renumbered in 1945 as No. 5296 to reflect the C&A merger with Gulf, Mobile & Ohio.

Based on the K-Line Catalogs, These Semi-Scale locos did not get the Lionel-licensed RailSounds and TMCC until the 2000 2nd Edition Catalog, starting with the K3386-1396 Southern Crescent K3640-0902 Katy Mikado. This loco K3308-0657S, came with K-Line "Real Sounds" and a less-expensive version, K3308-0657W, came with a "Digital Whistle." With the adoption of the Lionel systems, K-Line dropped the "S' and "W" suffixes.
