Freight from Coast to Coast and Beyond

In many ways Alaska today has remained much like the American West of the past century. It is a wild, unspoiled land where getting from one place to another can be difficult at best and is hazardous at worst. In short, it’s just the place that needs a good railroad.

For nearly 80 years, the Alaska Railroad has filled that need. From Seward on the Gulf of Alaska in the south to Fairbanks in the north, the blue and yellow locomotives of the ARR do the business of America’s last full-service railroad, moving over 500,000 passengers and 6.2 million tons of freight. Even more impressive than these statistics is that operation, owned by the State of Alaska since 1985, makes a profit almost every year.

The diesel-led log train is small part of that tonnage. The MP-15 Diesel features a horn, reversing unit and operating couplers for quality performance across the Alaskan tundra. The log cars are produced from die cast metal and carry a detailed load attached with separate metal chains. Bringing up the rear is a work caboose with an operating searchlight.
