One of Chicago and Alton's most prominent passenger trains, the Alton Limited was first introduced in 1899 and re-equipped in 1905 and in 1924. The vivid, red-maroon colors applied to the Alton Limited earned it the nickname of The Red Train.

Pullman built Chicago Parlor-Observation Car, reproduced by K-LINE® in 18 inches, was delivered as part of the 1924 consist. This observation car was an unusually long car. At 90 feet in length, it accommodated a Japanese tea room and a library. Beginning in 1903 a 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive led the Alton Limited. More Pacifics were purchased for the C&A from 1903 to 1913.
