K765-1711

In the 1950s a white chalk drawing of a man wearing a large sombrero napping beneath a palm tree began to appear on numerous train cars of various roadnames. Signed by “Herby,” the legend began that these drawings were done by a carefree hobo who left his mark on the cars he rode across the nation’s rails. The Missouri Pacific Safety Car #1 is the only boxcar to officially incorporate the artist’s design. The boxcar was actually a part of the railroad’s safety program whose slogan—Help Every Railroader Become Injury Exempt (HERBIE)—led to the altered spelling of the artist’s name.
