Operating in headed competition with the Burlington and Milwaukee Road streamliners, Chicago & North Western launched 'The 400' in 1939. Equipped with brand-new Pullman-Standard streamliner cars, this regional favorite linked Chicago with nearby metropolitan areas including Milwaukee, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Huron, S.D. The first bi-level cars on the C&NW were inaugurated in March 1955. Termed 'Superbanites' in railroad publicity, these cars introduced 'an entirely new concept in comfort.'
